Pediatric Cardiac Care
Pediatric Cardiology department of Shaheed Rajaie Cardiovascular Medical and Research Center was established in 1970. Since that time, this department has been placed as the pioneer in offering educational, treatment, and research services as well as being the country’s well-known department for heart diseases of children and teenagers. This facility which has provided 138 patient beds and daily clinics has proven this center is the biggest and well-equipped center in the region for delivering service for children’s heart disease.
Approximate yearly figures are: 23000 visits in clinic, 4800 admission, 2000 conducted angiography and catheterization cases, 1200 cardiac intervention cases, 200 electrophysiology study and ablation cases, 50 electrical device implantations, 25-30 pediatric heart transplantation, and 1400 congenital heart surgeries.
The Pediatric Heart Department consists of different units:
- Catherization laboratory equipped with two advanced angiographic machines.
- Echocardiography laboratory equipped with several advanced devices for transthoracic, transesophageal, and fetal echocardiography.
- Cardiac Electrophysiology, Holter monitoring and exercise test Unit.
- Pediatric wards with the capacity of 88 beds.
- Intensive care Unit with the capacity of 24 beds.
- Intensive care units designed for post-surgery cases with the capacity of 26 beds.
- Pediatric cardiac emergency ward
These services are performed by 13 pediatric cardiologists.
In addition to the core fellowship course for Pediatric Cardiology the department has advanced educating programs for the following fields:
- Fellowship of pediatric interventional cardiology: This field of study was developed in 2007 for the first time in Iran and its graduate is being introduced each year to country’s medical society.
- Pediatric Electrophysiology: In 2008 Pediatric Electrophysiology was developed in Iran for the first time and, this department is the only academic center in the country for conducting Pediatric Electrophysiology.
- Fetal Echocardiography: Academic teaching of fetal echocardiography was first organized in the year 2008 in this center. Currently, this department is able to diagnosis the heart defects in early weeks of pregnancy.
- Pediatric transesophageal echocardiography: Academic teaching of transesophageal echocardiography was first organized in 2008 and is capable of conducting transesophageal echocardiography while performing the congenital cardiac surgeries, and intervention.
- Pediatric heart failure and transplant: in 2012, this field was developed and is very successful in handling heart failure and transplanted patients.
