Department of Cardiac Electrophysiology (EP)

Facilities and Advanced Technology

The Department of Cardiac Electrophysiology at Shaheed Rajaie Cardiovascular Medical and Research Center is one of the unique departments in the field of cardiac electrophysiology in the East Mediterranean region. This lab is equipped with five rooms: three rooms dedicated to electrophysiology study and catheter ablation, and two rooms for device implantations.

EP Rooms

5 rooms

Ablation Rooms

3 rooms for EP study and catheter ablation.

Device Rooms

2 rooms for device implantations.

Mapping Systems

CARTO and NAVX Precision

AF Technology

Atrial fibrillation Cryoballoon ablation.

Daily Scope

Simple EP study to complex arrhythmia ablation.

Two EP rooms have been equipped with the latest technologies including 3D-mapping systems (CARTO and NAVX Precision) and atrial fibrillation (AF) Cryoballoon ablation. Every day, EP procedures from simple EP study to complex structural ventricular tachycardia (VT), atrial tachycardia (AT), atrial flutter (AFL) and AF ablations are performed in this center.

Interior view of the Electrophysiology Lab

All kinds of device procedures are performed in the device rooms, from single chamber pacemaker implantation to advanced defibrillator and resynchronization devices for heart failure patients, as well as device extractions.

Staffing and Patient Care

These services are performed by 8 experienced electrophysiologists, including 6 adult and 2 pediatric attending physicians. The physician members of this team are dedicated exclusively to electrophysiology and provide on-call support, 24 hours a day, seven days per week.

  • Supraventricular tachycardias
  • Ventricular tachycardias
  • Bradyarrhythmias
  • Rhythm disorders in coronary artery diseases
  • Arrhythmias in cardiomyopathies
  • Hereditary arrhythmias and ion-channelopathies

This department has the privilege of treating all kinds of rhythm disorders in patients with supraventricular and ventricular tachycardias and bradyarrhythmias. Patients include those with coronary artery diseases, cardiomyopathies, and hereditary arrhythmias in ion-channelopathies such as long QT syndrome, short QT syndrome and Brugada syndrome.

Training and Fellowship

This department was the first in the Middle East to start an EP fellowship training program. This program is an 18-month course covering A-to-Z cardiac electrophysiology and accepts 4 eligible fellows each year.

The department also launched a new complementary program beyond the official 18-month course for those who want further training in complex arrhythmia ablation, including AF and VT.
